Postpartum

My postpartum journey was forgotten as quickly as a bad cold, you remember it for two weeks while the pain is still prevelant but as soon as it is over you forget the agony. Without getting into too much detail, Ava was born as an assisted birth because her head was stuck in the birth canal. So after three hours of pushing we FINALLY decided to use the forceps. This caused third degree tearing in the southern regions and made me completely couch ridden with ice packs shoved in my underwear. I was a sight to see and STILL people wanted to come and see baby and I (well mostly baby). With that being said here are my tips if you are going to visit someone who just had a baby....

1. Come Bearing Gifts

Okay, I don't mean real gifts, but ask the new mommy if she wants some food, a drink, some more feminine products, ANYTHING. It can feel uncomfortable getting up to move, and truthfully you are more worried about keeping your baby alive than making yourself some lunch.

2. Be Supportive

Don't push the new mom to get up and go outside or walk around, everyone's postpartum journey is different, the new mom will know how much she can handle.

3. Help Out

If you are going to visit a new baby you might notice the house is kind of chaotic (especially if they have more children). Offer your help in tidying something, doing laundry, cooking, doing the dishes, the list is endless. This will make any mom fall in love with you and probably want you to come around more often.

4. Leave Your Judgements At Home

Parenthood is hard for anybody, does not matter your age, gender, relationship status. Babies change your life in such positive ways but in the first two weeks it can seem a little bit blurry. Please do not ask how our schedule is, or offer your advice about how to raise MY baby. I just got home from the hospital, I don't even recognize the word sleep let alone have a schedule. Please just leave your judgements at home and enjoy this special moment of snuggles and support.
